Hybrid Gull

Hybrid Gull, Milton Tip, 31st January 2014 © James Hanlon
'...a hybrid gull resembling adult Iceland but with grey on the leading edge of the primaries and a very herring gull-like head & bill. I put it down as herring x glaucous (aka 'viking' gull) as we're told Icelands rarely hybridise but was intrigued by its long-winged appearance.' JH

'If accepted, this is only the second record for the county for Taiga Bean Geese.

It has been a remarkable week for the site, with a great run of birds that have included Iceland Gull, Glaucous Gull and now Taiga Bean Geese.' JH

Caspian Gull

First Winter Caspian Gull, Milton Tip, 10th January 2014 © James Hanlon
'Great gulling at Milton today with juv glauc & Iceland & 4+ Caspian gulls (3+ 1w, 1 ad).
Lee Gregory had a different 1st winter Caspian earlier on and I see Ade Cooper had 3 adults. so that's a minimum of 7 Caspians, perhaps second only to the 9 seen last winter there in one day.
Addition 13/01/2014 - Saturday's two 3rd winters mean that a min of nine birds were seen between Fri pm and sat am - equal to the county record day count from last winter. In all probability there has probably been double figs present this weekend, a significant proportion of the national total.' JH
